Traumatic avulsion of the optic nerve.
Avulsion of the optic nerve is an infrequent traumatic event which results in a permanent and usually devastating loss of vision. We present two cases which highlight the salient features of partial and complete optic nerve avulsion. The clinical findings, including the results of B-scan ultrasonography, fluorescein angiography, and computed tomography (CT) are discussed. In addition, the past ...

Optic nerve avulsion is a rare, but devastating complication. In this condition, the optic nerve is forcibly disinserted from the retina, choroid, and vitreous, and the lamina cribrosa is retracted from the scleral rim. If the media are clear, the avulsion is easily diagnosed. The appearance of the fundus is striking, with a hole or cavity where the optic disc has retracted into its dural sheat...
متن کاملAnterior chiasmal optic nerve avulsion.
In a case of traumatic avulsion of the optic nerve at the anterior chiasm, MR imaging provided highly specific images of the injury site, including the absence of the optic nerve within the optic canal and the point of transection at the anterior portion of the chiasm. This was confirmed clinically and histopathologically. MR imaging should be considered in cases of suspected chiasmal injury.

DISCUSSION Cavernoma is a benign tumor and it is considered a dysplasia of the vessels-forming mesoderm. Cavernous hemangiomas in the vertebral, extradural, intradural extramedullary and intramedullary spaces are responsible for 3 to 16% of spinal vascular anomalies. Extradural cavernous hemangioma represent 4% of all spinal epidural lesions. Modern diagnostic imaging techniques are increasing ...

Optic disc drusen are congenital and developmental anomalies of the optic nerve head seen commonly in clinical practice, often as an incidental ophthalmologic finding during routine exams. Optic disc drusen are a form of calcific degeneration in some of the axons of the optic nerve. Visual acuity is often not affected but the visual fields of these patients can be abnormal and deteriorate over ...
